Asian Music Festival NYC pt.2

Korean Hip-Hop

Alright. Where do I begin. It’s been 3 days since the Asian Music Festival NYC. So much awesomeness in a short amount of hours. You already know how excited I was to attend the show. I gave up Block B in DC for goodness sakes. Let’s get right into it shall we?

I arrived in the city, met up with my girls Minah and Kat and quickly got changed and headed to BBKings. In the quick 2 stop subway ride to the venue, the heavens decided to open up and tried to ruin my hair! Luckily I had my jacket so I was able to rock the “jacket over the hair” style while we waited in line to get in. We had VIP tickets which meant we got in first, got into the afterparty and got pictures with the artists, so we were pretty stoked.

The line was a bit confusing because according to the tickets we had, VIP didn’t have to wait in line (haha yeah right). While we were trying to figure all that out, we ran into Mister Popo from Mister Popo TV, my fellow Aewen Radio dj & amazing youtuber. He had the super duper VVIP tickets but was just as unsure about everything as we were.

me & popo We decided that the best bet was to stand in line and wait until the event coordinators told us where to go. While we waited the rain continued, but we kept it cute and passed the time taking pictures.

After what seemed like hours we were finally in! Let me say this first, BBKings is casual. It’s intimate. But that doesn’t mean its okay to bum rush the stage and crush the people standing in the front (like myself) I thought I was going to get squished to death. Told myself I wasn’t going to do VIP standing room again. Whatever…

The DJ that was warming up the crowd was freaking fantastic. The girls and I (and some new friends) were going HAM when he was playing hiphop & R&B from the 90s. Not so much when he got to all that YOLO bullshit  Drake music but anyways, finally, FINALLY it began.

The Beginning Acts

Don’t let the heading fool you. Yes they were the beginning acts but these dudes held their own. First off was Rekstizzy.  He was hyping the crowd up. He was spitting water in the air and on the crowd (I wasn’t so pleased with that part).  He stated he was the opening to the opening act. He freaking jumped off the stage twice. It was that type of party. I wish I had recorded some of his songs because the dude’s flow was tight but I didn’t so here’s one of his vids for a song he  did that night.

Next up was Decipher aka  Danny Chung (he said he’s going by his government name now).  This man is talented. Hands down.

The song he did with Rekstizzy was…honestly it blew me away. I will definitely be following both of their careers from now on so expect to hear some of them on Daebak City

Main Event

Here’s how they came out: Bumkey, Kanto, Verbal Jint.

Bumkey came out and slayed some songs (Walking In The Rain & Bad Girl) before introducing himself and talk about how excited he was to be there. Judging from the crowds screaming and hand waving, they were excited about him being there too.  He sang Music Soulchild’s Love & Usher’s You Got It Bad before bringing out Kanto (who was freaking adorable).

It was Kanto’s birthday that night (old man turned 19) so Bumkey got the crowd to sing happy birthday to him and it was so damn precious. I didn’t want it to end. Kanto did a freestyle that was amazing. I didn’t understand the words but the flow was on point! After a while they thanked the crowd and it was time for them to leave for the next act.

It was the moment I was waiting for. I told myself to stay calm and not scream (though everyone else was already screaming their lungs out). It seemed as if the lights turned a cool blue and he stepped out on the stage. Verbal Jint.

The man is cool. He’s humble, nice, charismatic…. and I’m fangirling. Sorry. But seriously how can I  not? He was simply breath taking. He sang

Verbal Jint & Ajummah    some of the more popular songs (You Deserve Better, You Look Good, Walking In The Rain) as well as some songs that I wasn’t familiar with but I plan to rectify that situation ASAP. When he spoke to the crowd and told us that it was a dream of his to play on that particular stage and how he had been there years ago and saw the Harlem Gospel Choir…tears welled up. Seriously. Having a dream and being able to achieve it despite whatever setbacks you had in life, it really got to me. He had someone on stage to help him by the name of Hwayoung (and to everyone I told Hwayoung was the chick from T-ara, sorry). I know nothing about Hwayoung other then the fact that he can SANG! And he was really sweet. He and Verbal Jint were sweating profusely so my girl gave him a napkin to blot their heads. Hwayoung thanked her and then went over to VJ to help him out…then when my friend asked for it back, he gave it to her! LOL though he looked a bit surprised that she asked.

I didn’t want the night to end. After brief confusion we were able to take pictures with everyone (screams).

20140522_235934[1] We went to the afterparty but that will have to be told another time. So to all that read this, did you attend the concert? What was your favorite part? Let me know! That was an incredible night and I will never forget it. Definitely going to have to do it again soon!
