Korean Food: Baesuk (배숙) Steamed Pear

Ajummah has got the crud. A weird thing that’s like a cold but without fever or cough. It’s like I’m ALLLMOOST sick.  Naturally this is the one day I have off in a while so instead of doing stuff I should be doing, like laundry, cleaning, watching dramas…I’m stuck to the couch, watching dramas.During a break I decided to browse through maangchi.com, an amazing site choked full of Korean recipes. I came across the recipe for baesuk (배숙) which is steamed pear. Sounds delicious. I’m not a pear fan but after watching the video, I was sold. Plus I had everything already in the house (accept the pine nuts) so I figured I’d give it a whorl.

This is pretty much all you need. The recipe calls for Korean pears but Maangchi also says that you can use Borsc pears. The ones in the picture above are Bartlet pears but you gotta use what you got right?

So, after cleaning and cutting off the top of the pears, you have to scoop out the insides to remove the seeds. I thought that would be an easy process but I was wrong, lol.

Maangchi made it looked so easy but my first pear was borderline mutilated. The seeds were all the way down towards the bottom 0_o The second picture is of my second pear which was a bit better but you can see the damage done to the spoon I was using. There was no saving that bad boy.

Finally I was able to add the fruit, honey, cinnamon & ginger back into the pear.

I don’t have a steamer so I just used a pot and 2 ramekins to put the pears in. Since the pears are pretty small, it only takes about 20 – 30 mins of cooking. As I said I didn’t have any pine nuts or jujus so I just left the pears like this and put it in the pot.

After that, I pulled them out with tongs and gave it a try. I think I used too much ginger (OMG it had a spicy kick) but other then that it was pretty good. I want to say that this type of recipe could be used for apples as well, though I’m not exactly sure how (plus I’m allergic to apples so I probably wouldn’t try it anyway).
