K-HipHop Review: Crucial Star Boyhood

Korean Hip-Hop

Crucial Star released his newest EP on iTunes May 7, 2015. I have been looking forward to hearing this for a while now. His last album, Midnight, was magical. It had 15 songs of amazingness and to this day, it stays in heavy rotation on my iPod.

Boyhood only has six songs on it, but the quality is still there. I will say that none of the songs jump up and grab me immediately, but it’s still a solid EP.

boyhood 2 The album starts off with My Glider. It’s upbeat and catchy. I wish I understood Korean better so I can get the meaning behind the song. As of yet I haven’t found the translations to this album but I will  keep looking and update this when I do.

AIA featuring 주영is a smooth track. Their vocals blend well together, and I adore when Crucial Star sings as well as raps. This song is on the “repeat until I decide if I love it or like it” list.

Pet with Stella Jang is definitely my style. The pops and cracks at the beginning of the song that emulate an old school record playing is what sold me. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it’s the little things.  The melody is hauntingly beautiful and thumbs up for using a string section as well as to whoever is playing the drums on this track. You played the bejesus out of them.

Youngest Song was  released March 2015, and I was pleased to see that it made it on the album. I don’t know the words to this song, which really sucks when you’re an international fan. From the tone of it, the title, and of course using my expert musical sense, it feels like he’s talking about his childhood. I could be completely off the mark, but it makes me like this song a bit more knowing he’s taking us through his past. Also I know that’s his parents talking at the end of the song, but can someone please fill me in on what they’re saying? Thanks.

Earphone Boy might be my favorite song off the album. The piano was what first sold me but when that line “music is my life” came on, I found myself nodding along in agreement. I am nowhere without my music. I have 13 pairs of headphones scattered around my house and car so I can never be without music. If a song can instantly transport you to a certain memory in your life or have you feeling like it’s written just for you…that’s love. Thanks, Crucial Star.

Boys To Men is technically a “bonus track” though I never understood that phrase. What’s bonus about it? Did the artist not realize he put it on the album? Anyway it sounds like Crucial Star had a lot of fun with this song. More memories of his childhood, perhaps?

All in all, this is a solid EP and I am so happy to have new music from Crucial Star. What did you think of his album? Any favorites? Put it in the comment section below or tweet me  about it. boyhood 3
