Learn Korean With Viki Learn

Learning Korean

I am always trying to learn Korean. It can be difficult because I am living in an area where I can’t use Korean every day. Or I could use it, but I’d be talking to myself and I wouldn’t know if I was using it correctly or not. I am now in a Korean class and I’m really thankful for it, but I know it’s not enough. We’re on summer break and I will be honest, I have been slacking. I need to put in more hours of work.

I received an email from Viki saying they were Beta testing their new service, Viki Learn. They claim that this site has been designed to make learning Korean easy, fun, and innovative. I was curious so I decided to check it out. From what I’ve gathered, you have an option of 3 dramas (While You’re Sleeping, The Legend Of The Blue Sea, Strong Woman, Do Bong Soon) you can watch while learning Korean.

I chose While You’re Sleeping because I’ve seen the drama before so I kind of know what’s going on. That allows me to focus more on the subtitles. Viki Learn gives you a list of words to memorize, or at least try to, and then keep an eye out for when they come on screen.

Throughout the episodes, you will be able to hover your mouse over the Korean subtitles which allows you to see what each phrase means. There are also quizzes you can take to further cement the words into your memory.

I haven’t watched a full episode yet, but I like what I see so far. I do wish that Viki has some other options for those who want to gauge what they know without having to watch an episode. Sometimes I just don’t have the time to sit to watch a drama, just to review words I might know.

*update* I’m currently watching Investigation Couple on Viki and I noticed in the settings where you can set your captions, they have an option for Learn Mode. If there are enough native captions, you will be able to activate this option and use the show to practice Korean. That makes me really happy because the previously listed dramas weren’t something I wanted to see.

I’m definitely going to add Viki Learn to my arsenal of learning tools. Have you tried it out yet? What do you like about it so far?
