SuperM Releases The Tiger Inside Us With New Album

Album Review K-Pop

It’s 5:30 am, and I’m fully dressed. Why? I’m counting down the hours until Target is open so I can grab a few copies of SuperM’s newest album. I’m aware that I said I was not buying any more albums. Don’t judge me. I’ve been counting down the hours of this release since that first “Hey big head” text they sent a few weeks ago. SuperM and whoever runs the text account send me more messages than my husband does. I’m not mad about it.

I digress. Today is finally the day, and rather than preorder this masterpiece, I decided to throw caution to the wind and head to my closest Target and pray it’s there. I follow a few journalists who have been listening to it and let me say, my hands are sweating in anticipation. While I wait, I decided to listen to the songs because, of course, it’s already on Youtube. So as the kids say, let’s GET INTO IT!

One (Monster & Infinity)

When I first heard that SuperM would have a song like SHINee’s Sherlock (Clue + Note), I was skeptical. Would the songs meld together cohesively? Would the song be too busy? These were the questions that were running through my mind. And honestly, when I first heard it, I was nodding my head to the music but had the confused face while I was doing it, like that Jay-Z gif I love.

The second listen made things much better. There are still some parts I like a lot more than others, but I’m now satisfied with it. The vocal line pulled me in. There should be more of Baekhyun and Ten singing together. The blending of their voices was amazing, and I enjoyed hearing everyone in this song.

Also, this m/v? Wow. No expense was spared on it. How many outfit changes did we get? I’m counting at least 3.

Infinity

One half of One. I was looking forward to hearing this because, as I said earlier, parts of One that I liked more, so I wanted to see which song was which. Baekhyun’s opening “to infinity” got me hype, and I instantly added it to my Spotify list. 4 seconds into Mark Lee’s verse had me screaming his name like I was front row at a concert. I’m sure my neighbors hate me. Infinity lent their chorus to One, which is a part that I like. Infinity is my style, and any concerns I had about the album songs (looking at you 100) disappeared.

Monster

Okay, come through rap line! My first listen to Monster had me questioning which song I liked more since I was so convinced there would be a stark difference. I was mistaken. I was wrong! Monster is equally as good as Infinity. I’m glad the rap line has a chance to shine on a song. I would have loved to have seen an m/v for just this. How would they portray the monster that they speak of in the song?

The vocal line does a fabulous job with bridge and backing vocals, and now I’m torn as to which half of One I like more.

Wish You Were Here

When did I get transported to an island? How did this pina colada get in my hand? This song had me wishing I was somewhere warm, pandemic free, with lots of music and ocean water to swim in. Wish You Were Here slows the tempo down slightly, which is great because after seat dancing to the first three songs, my heart rate had reached peak numbers.

This is a song I’ll play while driving around imagining SuperM performing this while barefoot and wearing Aloha shirts.

Big Chance

Oh, an English song? Nice! Also, what big mistake are you talking about SuperM? Are you asking for my hand in marriage? Well, not my hand but someone who is in your age bracket and isn’t already, you know, married. Yes, let’s make that big mistake. You won’t regret it, trust me.

The is a lovely song to recover your breath with. While it may not end up on my workout out playlist, I won’t skip it when shuffling through the album.

100

Let’s get this out the way. I wanted to like this song. I really did, but I don’t. It’s not a horrible song, but it’s missing something for me. To this day, I have listened to it many times to see if it will grow on me, and it’s tolerable, but I will admit, I’ve skipped it when it comes up on shuffle. I’m sorry, SuperM. You know I love you. But this song isn’t it for me. Although the bridge with Taemin and Baekhyun is good.

Tiger Inside

With my feelings on 100 still fresh, I was REAL nervous about how Tiger Inside would be. I shouldn’t have worried. This was the song I needed. I didn’t even mind Mark’s hot pink mullet in the m/v. I was back to nodding my head along to the music with the stank face people make when they hear music that they vibe with.

Question though. Why was Taeyong growling on this track? I feel attacked. Baekhyun and Taemin combining their vocals, Baekhyun hitting THAT Note, and Mark’s verses had me throwing my glasses across my desk. My boys are back! I quickly added this song to my playlist.

Better Days

Slowing it all the way down with another English song. Are you trying to make me cry, SuperM? The lyrics to Better Days struck a chord because of everything we’ve been going through in 2020. My goodness, my eyes are burning while I type this. Better Days is a song that we needed. I appreciate them for creating this. I don’t know if I will be able to listen to it because I can’t be seen crying, but when I’m feeling low and need a reminder of better days, I know where to go.

Together At Home

Another stank face song. I love the bass line on this song. The synthesizer sound compliments the vocals, and I’m clapping my hands before they even tell me to. I know I’m going to have the Dada da hook stuck in my head for the rest of the weekend, and I’m not mad at it at all.

This is the type of song that I keep on repeat while I dance around my kitchen. When Lucas said, turn up the volume, you just need to feel this rhythm, I happily complied. This is one of my favorites from the album.

Drip

Let me tell you how nervous I was to hear this song. There are clips of Mark trying to explain this song on social media, and it had me sweating. Sexy? That’s an understatement. The way that bass line comes in, and when they start talking about drip, I just knew someone would ask someone to make it clap. My twerking friends are going to have a field day with this.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the choreography to this.

Line ‘Em Up

Line ‘Em Up has a different vibe for me, and while I appreciate Super M for branching out and trying different styles, this song is okay. I’m not mad about it because they’ve given us so many hits and bops. When Lucas started repeating line ’em up in my headphones, it almost made my heart stop. Jeez, kid, why is your voice so deep? Perhaps if I give it a few more listens, the song will grow on me.

Dangerous Woman

Since the day I heard them sing this live at the Super M concert almost a year ago, I have been waiting for this. I was coming down with a cold and had a sore throat at the show, but I lost my mind when they brought this beauty out. I was standing, yelling, and dancing like I wasn’t high up in the nose bleed section. As soon as I got home, I started searching for the clearest audio version I could find on Youtube. Now, I can finally rest my search.

Yes, make me feel like a dangerous woman with these harmonies! Baekhyun, if I had a wig, I would snatch it off and shake it at you. These notes you keep hitting is giving me life, making me lose weight and clearing my skin. Please don’t ever stop.

Step Up

See, I thought we weren’t going to get any baby-making music. I should have known better. Step Up is that song. I need to learn how to describe my feelings about this. Right now, my brain is screaming, yes. The slight chord change and harmonies in the chorus have all my arm hair standing straight up. As I type this, my toes are curling to the beat, and I want this song to be longer so that I can hear Lucas tell me to step up more.

So Long

Why are you doing this to me? Why are you putting these types of songs at the end of the album? You know how I feel about RnB music. The lyrics aren’t baby-making, but they make this breakup song sound so damn good that I’m thinking, maybe it won’t be that bad. Was that Ten going into falsetto range at the end of the first verse? Yes, sir, I am PLEASED! Show your growth. I know SuperM is saying they’re done, they’re out, but this song is so good, it has me running it back to the beginning before it ends. If you are going through a breakup, play this song for strength.

With You

It’s so great that SuperM released an m/v showing them practicing social distancing yet keeping themselves active. With You is a fitting song to close off the album. In my mind, I see SuperM on stage during this song, having fun with the audience and each other, like how artists do on the music shows after they won an award.

Listening to this album has been quite the journey. SuperM did a fantastic job with it, and while I won’t’ call it a no-skip album (thanks to 100), it’s going to be in heavy rotation for a long while. Right now, I can’t think of my top 3 songs, but I’m sure I’ll come up with it, so make sure you follow me on Twitter so we can discuss it.

What’s your favorite song on the album, and which song could you skip?
