The Case of the Itaewon Homicide

The case of the Itaewon Homicide has been haunting me this week. I blame Grazy Grace. Let me explain. True crime is a passion of mine. I wanted to be a police officer when I was a teen and watched hundreds of episodes of Law & Order. I was on Youtube looking for something to watch when I stumbled across Grazy Grace’s Youtube channel, GrazyTV.  Grace is well known from her videos on being a k-pop trainee, and other idol life videos, but didn’t realize she had multiple channels.

The first video I saw was another true crime that I want to talk about in another post but after I finished that video, the case of the Itaewon Homicide started. In the video, she discussed the crime and why even though there were two people arrested, no one knew what really happened. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. After doing a quick Google search, I found that there was a movie made about the murder and trial.

I’m not going to review the movie but you can see some of my thoughts via Twitter:

At the end of it, I couldn’t understand so many things, including:

  1. Why did the Burger King clean up the crime scene so quickly? I understand this happened in the early 2000s but even back then, people knew the importance of preserving a scene.
  2. Why wasn’t any DNA testing done on the murder weapon? A crime that violent would have left the killer with some type of injury.
  3. How the freak did they get away with it for so long?

If you don’t want to watch the movie, just know that it took over 10 years to “solve” this thing. I’m using quotations because I’m not thoroughly convinced that it was solved 100%. While the case of Itaewon Homicide took over my mind, Grace uploaded another video.

This video did answer some questions I had but in the end, I still was left wondering if this was the norm for some of the unsolved cases in Korea. Was saving face really more important than finding out who really did it? I kept saying they both should be in jail but then thought about if it were my son that was involved in this.  Would I want him to go to jail if he said the reason why he kept quiet was that he was afraid for his life? I don’t know. Maybe I’m playing devil’s advocate with myself.

I encourage you to check out Grace’s video and the movie. Let’s have a discussion about it!
