The Witch Subversion

Year Released: 2018

Genre: Action

Main Cast: Kim Da Mi, Jo Min Soo, Choi Woo Shik

I want to start this review/recap by saying this. The Witch Subversion isn’t a bad movie. There’s action, a plot, and some form of ending that leaves viewers hoping for a sequel. I was looking forward to the movie because I am the queen of dark movies and horror. Also, Choi  Woo Shik because I think he is an amazing actor. Having said that, my goodness. The movie’s ending made me mad. Let’s start at the beginning and as always, no spoilers.

The Witch Subversion opens up with a young child running through the woods covered in blood. Scary-looking men are chasing her. Thankfully, she didn’t get caught and was able to getaway. The evil woman in charge tells the men to stop searching since the child would be dead soon anyway. I was intrigued but also wanted to know why everyone was smoking so much during a search.

The young child turns out to be a little girl named Ja-Yoon and we get our first good look at her passed out on the ground. An older man sees her and rushes immediately to her side. He and his wife decide to take care of her. We time jump 10 years and see the girl living a normal life. Her friend strongly suggests that she tries out for a singing competition that could take care of her ailing mother’s medical bills.
The Witch Subversion has an all-star cast. Every few minutes I would squeak in surprise when a familiar face would come on the screen. The female lead is currently starring in Itaewon Class which is ridiculously popular. I’ll have to make a separate post on that because MY GOODNESS! That girl can play a ROLE. I digress.

On the way to the competition, they run into Mr. Fine Man himself Nobleman. He seems insistent that Ja-Yoon knew him but when she doesn’t react to him, he’s stunned. Things happen after this exchange that shows just how different Nobleman can be. Once he’s on the scene we get a good look at the evil side of the movie.
This movie was full of potential and I generally enjoyed it until the ending. Cool action scenes and sexy mysterious assassins aside, it seemed like the ending was missing a lot. I had so many questions as the credits rolled that I waited until the absolute end in case there was extra footage ala Marvel movie. Alas, there wasn’t.

The Witch Subversion is supposed to be part 1. It gives me hope that there will be a sequel that gives us (me) the answers that we (I) so desperately need. I strongly encourage everyone to watch it and make their own opinion. The action scenes were top notch. The storyline is great. I just needed more at the end.
Thank you so much to Well Go USA Entertainment for sending me the movie to watch before it’s release on March 10, 2020. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think!
