Amber Liu X Tour Recap

Conventions & Concerts
amber x tour

Let me start this recap by saying it was COLD in Silver Springs, MD. Like, COLD COLD. I’m not too fond of the cold, but for a concert, I want to see, like Amber Liu’s X Tour, I’ll deal with it. Amber’s X Tour was the first time I had Fanboy with me at a standing only event, so I was a bit worried, but he handled it like a champ.

Meet & Greet

I hate waiting in line! I knew that when I got the meet and greet tickets, I would have to wait quite a while before heading in to see Amber. At the time, I was okay with it, but my goodness! I could not handle the air being so cold! Some people enjoy the crisp air and cooler temperatures of winter. I do not. Give me spring and summer any day, please and thank you. The email we received said to show at 5 pm so that we could get our tickets and badges.

LINES. LONG LINES. You get the point.

After the forever stand-in-line situation, we finally get to meet Amber. I told Fanboy to go first and was proud that he didn’t freak out when meeting her. I think he was probably was shy and didn’t say much, but he smiled for their photo, which was good. During my turn, I told her how proud of her I was and appreciate all the music she’d had blessed us with so far. She was so sweet as she thanked me and took several photos with me and then another round with just me.

Naturally, after we walked away, I remember about ten things I wanted to say to her, but I will have to save them for another day. Fanboy and I claimed our piece of the venue to watch the show, sat on the floor to get comfortable for a while, and wait for the festivities to start.

Justin Park

I’ve known of Justin for a few years, after interviewing him briefly in 2017. He’s has grown musically so much, so I was excited to see how he would handle the Fillmore. Since he was the newest on tour, having started his part in Philly, Justin started the concert promptly at 8 pm. He started off his set with an unreleased song from his upcoming album. I didn’t catch the name of it but I knew after the first 30 seconds, it would become one of my favorites.

Justin quickly followed up with two songs from his first album, Like We Used To and On The Low. At this point, I felt like a proud mama as I watched people in the crowd who weren’t familiar with him, Shazaam and Google the music and saving it to their playlist. He finished up with another new song from his album and left the crowd wanting more.

Like I said, proud mama.

Meg & Dia

I walked into the concert, not knowing a thing about Meg and Dia. I couldn’t even guess as to what style of music they would have, which made me a little nervous, but I quickly learned that I had nothing to fear. The sisters (and their guitarist & drummer) made the crowd feel loved and welcomed as they spoke about the tour road they’ve traveled. Dia (I think it was Dia) said that she came down with the flu but that after a quick visit to Urgent Care, she was feeling marginally better (lol). Honestly, if she hadn’t had said she was sick, I wouldn’t have noticed. Dia was coughing, and her voice was a bit strained, but so is mine after a long night of karaoke. I thought she was dealing with a tired voice.

Their set was soothing and had the audience expressing their affections to others when Meg talked about a breakup that had her questioning life and her heart. I made a note to check out their music s they left the stage and encourage everyone to do the same.

Amber

The main event! My goodness was I ready. Amber always puts on a fantastic performance, and when she and her two dancers graced the stage, I knew it was going to be nothing less than amazing. She sang many songs from her X album and interspersed them with moments of talk. She covered everything from naming the crowd (Amber’s Bitches) discussing starting over and being yourself, and how to deal with people who try to block your blessings.

Let me say this. I love how quirky Amber is. She would get in her groove and start flailing about, only to stop and apologize for her weirdness. It made me think back on how I am at home. I dance (read not dance) around my kitchen, sing loudly in the shower (who doesn’t), and make random noises whenever I see fit. My children think I’m weird, and I’m okay with it.

I don’t have a lot of videos and pictures of Amber during the concert because I’m trying to live in the moment in 2020, but you can check out my Instagram highlight of the show and enjoy all the randomness.

Much too soon, it was over. Or so we thought. As people started chanting encore and screaming Amber’s name, the first strains of Let It Go began. Before my brain could even process what was happening, Amber, or should I say, Elsa came out on stage. She belted out those notes while her dancers, Olaf and Ana, hilariously played around. To add on to the chaos, other members of staff dressed in winter cosplay run out. I could NOT stop laughing.

Overall it was a beautiful night. I’m glad I decided Fanboy, and I should go. There is nothing like hearing musicians you love, live. Having an outlet that you can safely destress with is something I encourage everyone to have.
